Quantum Investment Must Turn Breakthroughs into British Growth

The Government’s announcement of £50 million for quantum technologies is welcome news for Britain’s innovators. Alongside £20 million for quantum communication networks and an £8 million expansion of quantum apprenticeships, it supports the businesses, supply chains and skills needed to turn scientific research into practical products.

Companies that received the funding should be championed. Siloton is developing a handheld eye scanner that could bring advanced diagnostics closer to patients, while Cerca Magnetics is working on wearable brain scanning. MoniRail’s positioning technology could help maintenance teams locate railway faults more accurately. QLM Technology is developing tools to detect greenhouse gas emissions, while Quantum Fabrix and ColdQuanta UK are pursuing applications in navigation, communications and security. Aegiq’s work demonstrates the importance of building domestic capability in quantum networking components.

These are tangible opportunities to improve public services, strengthen infrastructure, and create skilled employment. Delivering those benefits will require continued testing, commercial development and adoption.

Matching investment to ambition

The UK has spent decades building its quantum advantage. The opportunity is to now scale and speed up the pace of investment to match our ambition as international competition for technology and talent accelerates.

Too often, British scientific breakthroughs have created industries that scale elsewhere. We must give promising businesses the conditions to grow here: access to capital, specialist talent, strong supply chains and customers willing to adopt validated technologies.

Funding research and early development is essential. So is supporting the next stage, when companies need to manufacture, demonstrate reliability and secure commercial contracts.

Connecting quantum and AI

At the intersection of quantum computing and AI, Britain has an opportunity to build sovereign capabilities and world-leading businesses. That means developing the expertise, infrastructure and commercial capacity to retain lasting economic and strategic value in the UK.

At UKAI, we want to connect that ambition with the practical decisions facing businesses, investors and policymakers.

Our Quantum Britain conference on 2 November at The Oval, part of the Sovereign AI Summit, will explore how we turn this opportunity into lasting advantage.

This announcement is a welcome step. The task now is to translate investment into adoption, stronger British businesses and measurable benefits.
